Curriculum & Learning

What curriculum do you use?

Smarty Pants uses developmentally appropriate, hands-on instruction designed to build the academic, social, emotional, physical, and creative skills young children need. We believe children learn best when they are actively involved in meaningful and engaging experiences.  Each student has their own set of curriculum that helps them feel successful and builds the foundation for success!

What academic skills will my child learn?

Children work on age-appropriate early literacy, phonics, letter recognition, writing, math, numbers, patterns, science, fine-motor skills, communication, problem-solving, and other important school-readiness skills.

How do you prepare children for kindergarten?

Kindergarten readiness is about much more than knowing letters and numbers. We help children develop academic skills along with independence, confidence, communication, listening, following directions, problem-solving, fine-motor skills, and the ability to participate successfully in a classroom community.

Do students participate in art, music, STEM, and physical education?

Yes! We believe young children need opportunities to develop the whole child. Our learning experiences incorporate creative activities, art, STEM exploration, music and movement, physical activity, and hands-on learning alongside traditional preschool academics.  We also have an outdoor play area we use everyday!

How much time do children have for play and movement?

Play and movement are important parts of early childhood development. Children have opportunities to move, interact, explore, create, and learn through play throughout their preschool experience.  We move and play all day long!

Is there a lot of worksheet work?

We believe preschoolers learn best through a balance of teacher instruction, hands-on activities, movement, play, exploration, and age-appropriate independent practice. Worksheets may occasionally reinforce a skill, but they are not the primary way children learn at Smarty Pants.

Teachers & Classrooms

What are your class sizes and student-to-teacher ratios?

Class sizes vary by program and age group. We work to create classroom environments where teachers can build relationships with students, provide meaningful instruction, and support individual needs.  Our teacher to student ratio in our 4/5 yr class is 12:1 while our ration in 3/4 is 9:1

What qualifications do your teachers have?

Our program values knowledgeable, caring educators who understand early childhood development and how young children learn. Teachers receive training and support to help them provide engaging, developmentally appropriate learning experiences. Most of our teachers have 2 to 4 year Education Degrees.  Every teacher is state licensed.

How do you support children with different learning needs?

Every child develops at their own pace. Our teachers use observation, differentiated activities, repetition, modeling, and hands-on learning to help children build skills and confidence. Families are encouraged to communicate with us about their child's individual needs.

How do you handle challenging behaviors or conflicts between children?

Preschool is an important time for learning social and emotional skills. Teachers help children learn how to communicate, take turns, solve problems, express emotions appropriately, and work through conflicts in positive ways. We focus on teaching appropriate behavior rather than simply reacting to mistakes.

Potty Training & Independence

Does my child need to be potty trained?

Potty-training requirements may vary depending on your child's age and program. Please contact us about your child's specific situation so we can explain the requirements for their class.

What independence skills should my child have before starting?

Don't worry if your child can't do everything independently yet—that's part of what preschool is for! We help children practice skills such as cleaning up, following routines, taking care of belongings, washing hands, communicating needs, and becoming more independent.

Food, Snacks & Allergies

Do you provide snacks or meals?

Snack and meal arrangements vary depending on the length and type of program your child attends. Families receive specific information about what is provided and what should be sent from home.

How do you handle food allergies and dietary restrictions?

Please notify us of any allergies or dietary needs during enrollment and communicate directly with your child's teacher or program administration. We take allergy information seriously and work with families to help keep children safe.

Health & Safety

What happens if my child is sick?

Children who are ill should remain home until they meet the program's requirements for returning to school. This helps protect your child, classmates, and staff. Families should review our current illness policy for specific guidelines.

What safety and security procedures do you have in place?

The safety of our students is extremely important. We maintain established procedures for student supervision, authorized pick-up, emergencies, classroom safety, and communication with families.  Our classrooms are locked down during class time and only access to known family members are permitted.

What happens if my child gets hurt at preschool?

Minor bumps and scrapes can happen when children are learning and playing. Staff provide appropriate care and notify parents according to our procedures. Families are contacted promptly when an injury or situation requires additional attention.

Drop-Off & Pick-Up

What are your drop-off and pick-up procedures?

Families receive specific drop-off and pick-up instructions for their child's program. Please arrive on time and follow the established procedures so we can keep transitions safe and organized.

Who is allowed to pick up my child?

Children are released only to parents, guardians, or individuals who have been authorized according to our program procedures. Please notify us when there are changes to your child's approved pick-up information.

What happens if I am late picking up my child?

Please contact us as soon as possible if an emergency will make you late. Late pick-up policies and any applicable fees are provided to families during enrollment.

Parent Communication

How do you communicate with parents?

Communication is an important part of our partnership with families. Depending on the program, we may communicate through messages, newsletters, announcements, social media, email, or other parent communication tools.

Can I talk to my child's teacher about their progress?

Of course! We want parents to feel informed and involved. Teachers and administration are available to discuss questions, concerns, accomplishments, and your child's development.

How will I know what my child is learning?

We communicate classroom themes, skills, activities, and important announcements throughout the school year so families can stay connected to what is happening at preschool.

Starting Preschool

How do you handle separation anxiety?

It is completely normal for some children to feel nervous when they first start preschool. Our teachers use consistent routines, reassurance, engaging activities, and positive relationships to help children become comfortable with their new environment.  If your child is still having a hard time after a few weeks of school please communicate that with your teacher.

What if my child cries at drop-off?

Tears at drop-off can be a normal part of adjusting to preschool. A loving, confident, and consistent goodbye often helps children transition more successfully. Our teachers will help your child become involved in classroom activities and begin building positive connections.

What should my child bring to preschool?

What children need may vary by program.

What should my child wear to preschool?

Please send your child in comfortable clothing that allows them to play, move, paint, create, and explore. Preschool can get messy—and that's often a sign that great learning is happening!

Enrichment & Additional Programs

Can my child participate in additional classes or enrichment programs?

Yes! Smarty Pants may offer additional enrichment opportunities throughout the year. These can include creative, academic, physical, and hands-on experiences designed to give children even more opportunities to discover their interests.

What types of enrichment activities do you offer?

Offerings may vary throughout the year and can include activities involving art, STEM, cooking, movement, physical education, creative projects, and other special learning experiences.
